5 ways of styling your men’s trench coat

One of my clients is thinking of buying a trench coat and asked me about some cool ways to style it. I headed over to Pinterest to find some images to show him, and noticed a few cool looks coming up again and again.

You may already have a trench (or if you’re thinking of getting one, see the carousel with links at the bottom of the page) but always wear it in the same way, so I’ve grouped together some different looks here and added some notes. Hopefully you’ll see some you like and will be inspired to replicate them with your own trench coat.

You don’t have to be too literal about interpreting these to your own wardrobe either……..ie: you may not have the exact same trousers or shoes but could you style the top half the same? Or perhaps you don’t have the same colours but could you use the same shapes, and just change the tones or reverse them?

It’s all about making the most of what you have and pushing the boundaries a bit with fresh ideas. You’ll have your own style, and it’s about finding ways of expanding that to keep your wardrobe feeling new and exciting, but still feeling like you.

And, that’s what’s so exciting about styling…….it’s those nuances of how you make something your own. If you need help drawing that out, then give me a shout and I’ll be more than happy to help!

Styling your men's trench coat in a classic way.jpg

Styling your trench coat in a formal way

The first examples I found are with more formal clothing - it’s probably most people’s default way of wearing a trench as of course it looks great over a suit and tie. Take note of how the belts are tied, rather than belted with the buckle, and one of them has his collar up…..it’s these small details that make a difference.

The image on the right is a good example of an updated, contemporary version of a classic look with the wide leg chinos, button down shirt and what looks a cardigan rather than blazer underneath his mac.

Wearing your mac with jeans and loafers

It may be that you usually keep your mac to wear with smarter outfits, but these pics are a great example of how cool it looks with jeans, a cashmere or lambswool sweater and loafers. Notice how the jeans are a slightly wider cut and a bit cropped or worn with turn-ups.

You don’t have to go for the white socks (!) but could add a shot of colour (see previous blog post for ideas) or an argyle pattern or some flecked ones to create some interest.

Smart casual styling for your men’s trench coat

A trench works perfectly with these smart casual outfits - where you have tailored trousers and trainers, a long sleeved top or casual shirt.

I particularly like how the guy on the right has layered a fleece gilet on top of his striped Breton and the way he’s tied the jacket so it’s open……maybe not the most practical solution (especially if it’s raining!) but it looks great!

Styling your men's trench coat with a denim jacket.jpg

Layering a denim jacket under your trench or mac

This could be my favourite idea……maybe because I used to wear my mac like this, or perhaps because I think it’s a very practical way of layering which looks stylish too.

You could do up one or two buttons on the denim jacket like you can see in the middle and right hand outfits, or leave it open over your layers like the guy on the left. I also particularly like the look of just doing up the top one or two buttons on a denim jacket.

I’m not a massive fan of double denim, so I’d go for trousers other than jeans…..though I do think the off white ones in the right hand pic work well.

Interesting looks for men with a scarf and trench coat.jpg

Styling your trench coat with a scarf

I thought the way these guys were all wearing their scarves differently was interesting and made the outfits look infinitely more exciting than they would be without.

The guy on the left looks like he’s wearing a square scarf - you may find this slightly feminine looking but you could just as easily do it with a bandana style cotton scarf to toughen it up a bit. The man on the right has made a very wearable look a bit more interesting by wearing his scarf on the outside of the trench and tying it in that open way again.

The one in the middle is making a bit more of a statement, and layering a shirt over a polo neck…..very 70s and very fashionable at the moment. You could do this in a more relaxed way if that doesn’t feel right, by putting a roll neck under an over-shirt and leaving it untucked. Then you layer your mac on top, and add a scarf….the one he has on looks like it might be a large square that he’s rolled, but you could just do it with a regular one. A print would look good if everything else is plain.
