Check coats for Spring

As Spring is coming (I think?!) it'd be nice to lighten up a little with the outerwear. There are lots of checks around at the moment and if you tend to wear plainer colours as your basics, this could be a great way to reinvigorate your wardrobe for Spring. I urge you to at least try one on when you're next out shopping and who knows, you may even like it.

Mackintosh check wool coat - personal shopping for men

This is one of my favourites - I love the red check running through it and the raglan sleeves are very "now". Be aware though that they can round off your shoulders somewhat, so if you have very sloping shoulders, you might be better with a set in sleeve. Wear it with a chunky dark red roll neck, jeans and Red Wing boots for casual wear now or with dark jeans and a white t-shirt in summer with these red Margiela trainers.

A.P.C. Stefano check coat - personal styling for men

I knew A.P.C. would have something like this - 'understated cool' is so their thing. This is double faced cotton and water repellent so perfect for Spring showers. I like how they've styled it here, or you could make it a bit more "preppy" with slim black trousers, a black knitted polo shirt, and some suede loafers.

Reiss Takasada mac - styling advice for men

I spotted this whilst recce-ing for a client the other day. If your budget is a bit limited, then this one is a good option. It's padded inside, so will keep you warm as well as dry and the hidden placket keeps it looking streamlined, which helps you look taller if you're a little on the short side. I can't say I like how they've styled it on their website (I think the dark haired model looks a bit washed out in it!) and the lighter, grey-ish tones will look better if you're fair. It'd be great over a navy suit for work or black jeans for weekends.

Arket dogtooth car coat - personal stylist for men

Arket is a place I'm still discovering and I made my first purchase with a client there a couple of weeks ago. This is a modern take on the classic mac, with those big flap pockets and side vents. It still has the traditional storm flap though to keep the wind from whistling down your neck. I also like the fact this is a darker grey as so many of them tend towards the beige/brown/tan scale, this would be great for those that look better in cooler tones.

Stella McCartney oversized check coat - personal shopper for men

If you prefer a longer style and are confident enough to wear this oversized silhouette, then have a look at this one. It's got an inverted pleat at the back which gives it an a-line shape. I think it'd look great on a tall, large guy with a white shirt, camel crew neck and wider navy chinos and then to balance out the volume, some chunky trainers like these or if you're not into trainers, some tan leather boots.

Oversized check wool blend coat - Stella McCartney at Harvey Nichols - £1,255.00
