Corduroy jackets

Corduroy has been 'having a moment' for a good few years now, and with all things fashion heading back to the 70s, I doubt it'll go away anytime soon.

If you haven't yet embraced it and you're feeling a bit bored with your wardrobe, then let's add some texture to it with cord.  Here's my pick of the jackets - some for now (a few of which are on sale) and some which you'll be able to wear as a jacket when Spring comes, but for now can be worn at home or as a layering piece under a heavier coat.

Ginger Linfield jacket Penton cord bomber jacket

Oliver Spencer is my go-to place for clothes with a natural 'undone / not trying too hard' feel to them. He makes great use of textures and this cord jacket provides a good example, especially when mixed with the twill trousers and chunky knit sweater.

If you're someone who has a triangular shape (broad shoulders & slim waist) this is a great style for you as you can afford to have the large pockets and elasticated band around the middle, but if you have a paunch, give it a swerve and go for something with simpler detailing.

Ecru cotton corduroy chore jacket Mr P at Mr Porter

If you've got all the winter jackets you could possibly need and you're looking ahead to Spring, then try out this ecru cord chore jacket. You can style it with a zip neck sweatshirt under it as they've done here, a polo neck or just a t-shirt when the days get warmer. And if you can't wait till Spring has sprung, then wear it now with a raglan sleeve coat layered on top to keep you toasty.

A light coloured jacket like this, worn with layers underneath is great for you if you're a very slim guy and would like to look a little bulkier. Horizontal stripes work particularly well so a striped t-shirt under an open shirt would look great and really help to visually fill you out.

Folk corduroy Signal Jacket in brick red

Fed up with dark colours and looking for something to brighten up these dark days? Head over to Folk for this vibrant cord zip through jacket. If you think it's going to be hard to wear, just look at how well it works with navy and white. As long as you stick to these or other neutrals like grey, black, or denim (and yes, I know for sure you've got them in your wardrobe!) you can't go wrong.

The boxy cut and simple silhouette will be flattering on you if you're stocky or have acquired some lockdown love handles. Just make sure you keep the colours underneath dark,  and all eyes will be drawn to the brighter colour on top.

A Days March Original Overshirt Army green corduroy

But if there's no way José, you're ever going to wear those bright colours as you're way more understated than that, here's the one for you. In a subtle army green this works pretty much as a neutral, so can be worn with almost any other colours.

Useful to wear around the house with a simple fine gauge crew neck when you're WFH or at the weekends you can layer it over a hoody. (see my post on 5 x ways to style an overshirt for more ideas) It's the sort of thing you never knew you needed, but once you've got it, you don't know how you did without it. And when it's half price, it's a no brainer.

Aime Leon Dore Woolrich corduroy velvet down jacket

Looking for something you can wear now? At this time of year a lot of places have sold out of warmer jackets but as they're Woolrich's speciality you can find them here all year round. And if you're looking for a puffa with a difference, then a cord one is a more unusual choice.

The navy looks excellent with the rust and grey, but if you've always had blue jackets in the past and would like a change, it also comes in beige. Can't decide? I'd say go for the navy if you have more purple, pink, red and forest green tones in your wardrobe,  but if you're more into khaki, brown, burnt orange, and mustard then the beige will work better. (And if you don't know, you need to book in for a Colour & Style Consultation!)
