Casual & smart casual men’s Christmas party outfits in 2024

The 1st of December - we can officially go Christmas mad!! (Although Central London feels like it’s been going Christmas mad for the past few months).

I’ve got my first Xmas party coming up this week, and perhaps you have too? I’ve already seen loads of guides on dressing for Christmas events and it seems like every single one of them features a tuxedo or velvet blazer. The thing is, there are tons of people who are not likely to be getting that dressed up, but would like a good outfit that feels a bit special and different from your normal every day wear but still fairly casual.

Well if that’s the sort of men’s Christmas party outfit you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s my five suggestions - even if you’re not buying anything new, it may just give you some ideas of how to style similar outfits in your wardrobe.

And if you need any help, give me a shout - I have a few slots left before Christmas!

A casual Christmas outfit for men with a velvet bomber jacket

Okay so I have included some velvet in here, but in the form of a casual jacket……so you have the luxe fabric but a more everyday shape that’s easy to pair with more casual items.

The Folk ‘Assembly” pants are my go-to for guys who want a looser shape but not too baggy. This sweater brand was introduced to me recently by a friend who was wearing one of their sweaters when we met up and I was admiring it. It’s similar to the Drakes ones, but significantly less expensive, and it’s a small family run business. For this outfit I chose the bright mustard colour so it stands out against the earthy green and brown of the trousers and jacket.

Put chunkier soled shoes with wider leg trousers and add some Fairisle socks which add some pattern and pick up on the yellow of the jumper (and you may notice in some of the images on my site!).

‘Arlington’ olive green velvet bomber jacket - Oliver Spencer - £459
Beige pleat ‘Assembly’ trousers - Folk - £145
’Haerie’ brushed jumper in gorse flower - Shetland Woollen Co - £120
’Avignon’ dark brown suede shoes - Paraboot at Trunk Clothiers - £385
Fairisle Heat Tech socks - Uniqlo - £7.90

Add some Christmas red to your casual men’s party outfit

If you’re a much more casual sort of guy, and never have the occasion to wear a blazer, let alone a tux then this outfit is likely to be much more your vibe. I’ve given a nod to Christmas with the red coloured shirt, which is in a really interesting texture, combining both seersucker and cord….click through to see it in detail.

I’ve kept the rest of the outfit casual with some default dark jeans (always a bit smarter than light ones) and a grey t-shirt to put under the shirt. I chose grey rather than white as (a) white might look too “Santa” and (b) red and white always reminds me of the Red Cross sign.

I’ve topped and tailed the outfit with multi coloured trainers (more nods to Xmas with the green) and an orange toned beanie which blends well with the shirt, and the shoes.

Brick red seersucker corduroy shirt - Wax London - £105
’Gritty Jackson’ dark indigo jeans - Nudie - £145
Light grey melange midnight t-shirt - Arket - £27
’Montreal Man’ multicoloured trainers - Hoff - £110
Space dye orange beanie - Corridor at End Clothing - £75

A dark shirt creates an elegant men’s Christmas outfit

A client bought this shirt last week - it looked really great on him and he can see himself wearing it often. It’s got a very subtle print on it which makes it interesting but not OTT (most guy’s worst fear!) and a dark shirt rings the changes from the traditional light shirt/dark trousers office combo too.

I’ve put it with black jeans here (but it could also go with dark blue), and added some black polished boots. You may just get a flash of the zig zag socks when you sit down to give a fun (but NOT novelty!) aspect to the outfit.

As you’ve already got the pattern, I’d go for a plain black belt with silver to finish off your look. You could tuck the shirt in, wear it out, or wear it over a white t-shirt too if you wanted.

Navy tailored fit printed corduroy shirt - Paul Smith - £101.50
’Gritty Jackson’ dry everblack jeans - Nudie - £125
Black leather ‘Sparrow’ boots - Paul Smith - £346.50
’Aldefren’ zig zag wool socks - Beaufort and Blake - £20
Black leather belt - Andersons at Mr Porter - £115

A knitted shirt is great for smart casual events around Xmas time

This is a cosy casual look in colours that remind me of roaring fires. These button through knitted shirts are great for around Christmas - you might be going to someone’s house or for a casual pub lunch and want to feel cosy but a little dressed up. The addition of a collar always provides an element of dressiness.

These flannel trousers by Mr Marvis are also a great hybrid solution - flannel is generally thought of as a more formal fabric but they’ve given these a more casual look too, making them very versatile.

And clever Paul Smith has been at it again with these boots, which have this interesting detail of the two colours which makes them slightly different and that’s what he does so well.

I’ve added these casual accessories which I liked as they add some pattern and texture to the outfit, and bring the colours in. Or if you preferred, you could go for smarter and sleeker ones too - a plain cashmere scarf in a deep rust colour, and a pair of brown leather gloves perhaps.

Men’s orange merino wool knit polo - Sirplus - £156
’Newmans’ grey flannel - Mr Marvis - £129
Jacquard knit scarf - Pendleton at Mr Porter - £128
Tan leather ‘Crane’ chukka boots - Paul Smith - £210
Wool pile gloves - Elmer Gloves at End Clothing - £79

Add an instant upgrade with a cord blazer for the Christmas party season

And my one outfit with a blazer, just in case you do need something a little more dressy. It’s cord which is a little more relaxed than velvet, and I decided to keep that more casual feel with the chambray shirt, which is a great solution to dress down a blazer.

Incotex at Slowear are always my failsafe place for chinos, and most people who I buy them with, go back for more. Navy is something most men are likely to wear time and time again, and it makes a gorgeous combo with the purple cord blazer.

The scarf ties all the colours together perfectly, or you could have a pocket square in similar colours if you wanted to dress it up even more. I do love burgundy shoes and thought these loafers would be perfect to complete the look. I might add some dark green socks to bring in the green of the scarf/pocket square - it’s those little details that give a thought-out and finished off look…..don’t forget them!

Purple stretch corduroy suit jacket - Paul Smith at Mr Porter - £600
Button down chambray shirt - Alex Mill at Mr Porter - £83
Slim fit doeskin trousers - Incotex at Slowear - £360
Checked wool scarf and cashmere scarf - Polo Ralph Lauren at Mr Porter - £175
’Scott’ polished leather loafers - Mr P at Mr Porter - £245
