What shoes to buy in summer if you don't like sandals

Every summer I get asked by a number of clients what shoes I can suggest for summer to wear with shorts and no socks (or no show socks) as an alternative to sandals.

Here are some of the suggestions I've made which you may find helpful if you too, don't like getting your toes out in public in summer - or just find it easier to walk around in something that actually covers your foot :)

Paul Smith Quint knitted boat shoes summer shoes when you dont like sandals

Made from a lightweight fabric, these deck shoes will be a lot lighter and less clumpy than many of the others on the market. I imagine they'll be super comfy too with a cushioned foot-bed. Wear them with tan shorts or they'd look great with chinos too.

PS by Paul Smith at Coggles - £160 (Now sold out but here's a link to the classic Sperry style)

Orlebar Brown Larson shoes you can swin in

A client of mine bought these recently and loved the fact that they're essentially trainers but breathable. Not only that they're super lightweight.....and the pièce de résistance? You can swim in them! Ta da!

Swims braided Luxe loafter driver what shoes to wear in summer

And talking of swimming....these loafers are from a brand called Swims. Both breathable and water friendly these are perfect for messing around by the pool or on the beach.

Castaner espadrilles mens shoes for summer

You may think I'm pushing the boat out a bit with this colour, but listen up a moment. Yesterday I was at a client's house and he had some trainers in a very similar colour to this. They were unworn as he hadn't quite figured out what to wear them with and wasn't sure whether to keep them or not. But I styled up loads of outfits with them and they looked great.....they went perfectly with all the greys and muted blues and white he had in his wardrobe but just added a little freshness to the outfits.

Still.....if you're really not convinced these come in lots of other colours too.

Castaner at Mr Porter - £70 - £90

Onia Montrose nylon espadrilles

And if you're not a fan of slip ons and prefer some laces - then how about these lace up espadrilles? They're made from quick drying water resistant nylon and despite having laces you can pull them on and off for ease.

Montrose nylon espadrilles by Onia exclusive for Mr Porter £70 (Not available anymore but similar here and here and here)
