What to wear to take your mum out for Mother's Day

Taking your mum out for lunch on Mother's Day on Sunday 22nd March? You probably haven't thought about what to wear yet, but this is exactly the sort of occasion that you need to master the tricky smart/casual scenario so you can look smart but not as if you're going to the office.

Here's some style swaps for you, so you can make your mum proud this Mother's Day and that you can put into rotation for other occasions that require a similar dress code too.

Slowear Montedoro blazer - what to wear to take your mum out for Mothers Day

Honour your mum with a sense of occasion and dress up a little for her special day. No need to go full on formal though, this blazer in a cotton and linen jersey mix and unusual colour will do the job perfectly and with it's casual feel, there's no chance you'll feel like you're back in your school blazer and about to be told off for not doing your homework.

Slim fit blazer in cotton and linen jersey - Montedoro - £680

Officine Generale jeans - outfit suggestions for smart casual lunches

If your mum is anything like mine, she'll hate worn-in denim. No matter how much you might have splashed out on designer denim with carefully crafted ageing, patches or holes - she'll think it looks scruffy. Keep her happy by wearing a nice smart pair of indigo denim jeans with a clean, uniform wash instead.

Denim 'Kurt' Japanese selvedge jeans - Officine Générale - £162

Navy jersey Corneliani shirt - styling a smart casual look

Don't want to give up your t-shirt but know your mother would prefer you in a shirt? Cheat it with this cotton jersey shirt....all the comfort of a t-shirt, but with the smarter look of a shirt and the added bonus that in the darker colour it won't resemble your business shirts.

Navy cotton jersey shirt - Corneliani at Harvey Nichols - £190

Reiss merino sweater - outfit ideas for taking your mum out on Mothers Day

Wear a colour in a fine knit sweater that makes your eyes look bright and your skin look fresh.  So even if you have been burning the candle at both ends either through work or play, your secret's safe and your mum won't start worrying about you. And if you don't know which colours make you look great, then book in for a Colour & Style Consultation with me.

'Wessex' merino wool burnt orange jumper - Reiss - £85

Cheaney Derby shoes - personal styling for men

You and I know your trainers look cool and are the height of fashion, but your mum will just be wondering why you came straight from the gym. Don't send her into a trauma with your trainers this Mother's Day, just swap them for some textured leather Derbies for the day - not too smart, not too casual.
