What trousers can I wear instead of jeans?

Something I often shop for with men on personal shopping trips are casual trousers that are not jeans. It's nice to have a substitute to wear so you don't get bored with your wardrobe, and feel like you wear the same things over and over.

With that in mind, I've gathered some suggestions together here for alternative options to jeans, that are just as comfy and practical. Which would you go for?

And if you've barely bought anything since lockdown (like a lot of my clients) and don't know where to start to  refresh and reignite your wardrobe, then drop me a message and let's arrange a personal shopping trip.

Spoke cord jeans - personal styling shopping for men

Same shape, different fabric.......a side step from jeans, sneaky eh?! Sometimes that's all that's needed to switch things up in your wardrobe, but if navy is still too close to denim, there are lots of other colours available too.

And if you don't know Spoke already, they do the 'in between' (ie the uneven numbers) waist sizes and leg lengths, plus different 'builds' so they'll fit even if you have very slim or wide thighs.

Paul Smith casual chinos - personal stylist personal shopper for men

A casual chino is a great alternative to jeans and this colour is something I've been favouring with clients recently - the reason? Because it adds some contrast, and goes brilliantly with the navy, grey, black, white and denim you're likely to have in your wardrobe already.

The little details on these of the inverted side pocket and happy face embroidery, make them more casual too, so a great replacement for jeans when you want a change at the weekends.

Wax London drawstring trousers - styling advice for men

If you can't get back into 'proper' trousers after wearing sweatpants all through lockdown, then invest in some drawstring waist trousers like these.....also good if you're still working from home. They look great with knits, sweatshirts and overshirts and the chunkier trainers that are around. A word of advice though....unless you have a very flat stomach, wear your tops untucked!

'Kurt' khaki heavy twill trousers - Wax London - £95

Slowear cargo pants - personal styling tips for men

After being fashionable for most of the 90s, do you remember when cargo pants eventually lost favour and were ridiculed as being the height of distaste? Well no longer! Dig out your old ones (maybe you never stopped wearing them?!) or get some new ones.

I'm buying slimmer leg ones with clients, to ease them in gently, and maybe in a few years time, we'll feel ready for the super baggy ones.

They're worth investing in though as I'm sure they're going to have a good long stretch of being fashionable again as they're so practical....and I know you guys love a bit of practicality in your clothes!

Rag and Bone worker pants - personal style advice for men

As popularised by brands like Carhartt, a carpenter / workwear style is a brilliant alternative to jeans. More casual than chinos and a loose shape, this particular pair are made from a stretch cotton canvas which makes them even more comfy. Wear them with a denim shirt. or jacket and t-shirt, knit, or hoody for a great weekend look.

Here's what one happy client said after his personal shopping trip:

"Sarah has a good eye for what fits and which colours work, and she provides excellent service. She shows genuine enthusiasm for finding clothes that suit me and and are what I am looking for, working within my budgetary guidelines while also bringing me to places I have not shopped before.

She has encouraged me to push the envelope a little bit on colour and style, which is exactly what I asked for.

Her "scouting" ahead of a shopping trip saved me masses of time, which is great because I wanted better clothes but I really hate shopping.

After a trip is over, she has been willing to exchange emails about where to look for the 1-2 items that were not found, and also to provide advice on what goes well with what else. I have used her service for two big shopping trips (one winter, one summer), and would highly recommend Sarah to any man who wants to improve their wardrobe but does not enjoy hunting for and choosing clothes."
