What belts to wear with black or brown shoes
How many belts do you own? It's common for me to find just one or two when I go over to a client's to do a wardrobe edit. And it's usually black, brown or tan.
There's nothing wrong with them, but the reason men book me to help with their wardrobes, is to introduce some interest and shake things up a bit! So I find myself regularly suggesting that they add some alternative belts into the mix. If we don't buy them on our shopping trip, I often send links afterwards, when I'm putting together their outfit list, of belts that give the finishing touches to the outfit and pull it all together.
Most men will have shoes in black or brown, so I thought it would be helpful to put together some suggestions on what belts to wear with them that aren't plain black or brown leather.
Let me know what you think!
If your shoes or boots happen to be in a reddish tone of brown, then this burgundy will tone in really well with them and is probably easier to coordinate than a plain one too. WIth a pale blue shirt, dark jeans and a brown toned jacket this will bring things together nicely.
Burgundy & navy woven textile belt - Anderson's at End Clothing - £89
"Fred" burnished leather brogue boots - Grenson at Mr Porter - £245
Sometimes a plain black belt will work perfectly - if you're wearing a patterned shirt or jacket for instance, but if you have on a plain outfit, a stripe can just break things up a little without looking like you've tried too hard. Add this belt to an outfit of black jeans or trousers, white shirt and grey jacket to tone everything together and add some texture.
Black, white and grey stripe woven belt - Tyler & Tyler - £35
"Albermarle" black lace up desert boots - Russell & Bromley - £235
When you're wearing darker coloured trousers with lighter shoes, it can look a little odd to wear a lighter belt too and it also breaks up the lines of your body and tends to make your legs look shorter. Instead then, try a polo belt like this one to add a bit of colour and spice to your outfit. You could also wear it with darker brown shoes to tone in with the leather buckle.
Leather polo belt - Pampeano at John Lewis -£65
Stone suede "Rostflex" shoes - Astorflex at End Clothing - £175
Bored with black and fancy ramping things up a bit? This belt is reversible so you get two for the price of one! So this side is the more muted one, which will go perfectly with grey chinos, pale blue shirt and maybe a burgundy blazer and the other side is brighter (click link below to see) and could be fun for weekends with jeans and white trainers.
Reversible plaited leather belt - Paul Smith at John Lewis - £130
Black leather "Tilson" long wing brogues - Paul Smith - £375
A tan belt and shoes is a great classic combo, but sometimes you just feel like ringing the changes don't you? This belt would add some life to a beige chino, white shirt, navy blazer outfit and perhaps you could bring in the brighter blue with a toning pocket square too?
Washed cotton, canvas and leather belt - Hackett - £45
"Latherton" dark tan Derby - Oliver Sweeney - £239
