What to wear for a wedding - as guest or groom
Wedding season is in full swing and I've had a couple of clients asking me to help them put outfits together for occasions they have coming up.
We all saw the Royal Wedding and it seems I was influenced somewhat by the yellow that a certain Mr George Clooney was wearing, but in fact, one of the outfits I created was actually bought before that! And although I thought GC looked very dapper, I'm still struggling with the matching tie and pocket square....I prefer it to tone not match exactly.
Here I'm going to explain how I put together the outfits together for my clients:
This outfit was for a client who's in his mid thirties and wanted an outfit for a wedding that he was attending this Summer. He usually dresses casually for work so there was no worries about crossing over with work suits, but the lighter colour of this suit does say more "summer wedding" than office.
We saw this suit in Harvey Nichols and really liked the colour of it which looked great with his blond hair and blue eyes and we loved the slightly slubby texture of it which the silk mix gives. We were a little limited in choice as my client has quite developed calf muscles so we couldn't go too skinny on the trouser legs which discounted a lot of options. He still ended up getting these taken out a touch, after which they were perfect.
The shirt has a very tiny check to it which added a little bit of subtle interest.......the client is very understated but likes things with a little bit of difference to them.
Unfortunately I can't find a picture of the exact tie we chose - which was a yellow and blue Lanvin one, so I've substituted it with this Ferragamo one which is similar. As mentioned above, unlike George Clooney, I like to see a pocket square that tones with the tie and not matches it exactly and luckily my client already had the cream lace one from Marwood which went perfectly with the tie and is also unusual enough to give a young and fresh look.
The suede shoes are formal as they're an Oxford style and the suede looks summery and soft. The final finishing details were the belt which we matched to the shoes, and the very elegant shadow ribbed socks from Falke.

This outfit was for a client's wedding coming up this summer. He's mid forties and the brief was to have something that he could wear again but a look that was also special enough for him to get married in. We'd exchanged lots of pictures that we'd found on Pinterest and the original idea was to go for a more tweedy look as this really suits his style. Being a summer wedding though, we decided against this and linen seemed the obvious next choice but looking hugely crumpled in your wedding pictures for years to come, was not an option!
So eventually we opted for this charcoal grey suit from Richard James - my client liked that it wasn't completely flat in colouring and had a little bit of texture going on. Next we added the waistcoat as he really liked the depth of the layered look and also the beige linen mix of the waistcoat added a nice natural textural touch, which is very much his thing. Next, the shirt - the client had mentioned that he liked the Edwardian look and this pin collar shirt gave a subtle nod to this with the added bonus that it looks more dressy - even though neither of us had a white shirt in mind (his colouring is Autumn and he looks better in cream or off white), this did really look great and added a formal touch. The slubby tie from Drakes was great for his colouring and I was adamant that he should stay away from a shiny silk tie.
You may be wondering why I have a scarf in the mix?! Well we couldn't find a pocket square that went so we chose this scarf to have made into a pocket square (and still be able to use it as a scarf afterwards!) as the colours were spot on. The yellow in the scarf picked out the colour of the tie, the cream went well with the waistcoat and he also wanted to bring in a little blue as his wife to be's engagement ring is a sapphire and he was hoping to find some vintage sapphire cufflinks.
We finished it off with these dark brown Oxfords which look a lot more expensive than they were!
